SNDF Europe, June 3, 2003 - Furthering the development of open standards for embedded interconnects, QNX Software Systems today demonstrated support for the new RapidIO-compliant product line from Tundra Semiconductor.
At the Motorola Smart Networks Forum Europe this week, QNX is running the QNX® Neutrino® realtime operating system over Tundra's RapidIOTM fabric, linking legacy PCI and PCI-X systems with the Tundra Tsi400TM RapidIO to PCI-X Bus Bridge and Tsi500TM Multi-bus Switch products. QNX and Tundra are members of the RapidIO Trade Association.
The RapidIO architecture is an electronic data communications standard for interconnecting chips on a circuit board and circuit boards using a backplane. This new high-performance, packet-switched interconnect technology was designed for embedded systems, primarily for the networking and communications markets. RapidIO architecture offers the bandwidth, software independence, fault tolerance, and low latency required in next-generation designs.
The QNX Neutrino RTOS provides a high availability framework within a memory-protected microkernel architecture. Its modular design and message passing capabilities are ideally suited to the demands of RapidIO-centric designs, including the ability to perform distributed processing, symmetric multiprocessing (SMP), automatic software-fault recovery, and fault-tolerant networking.
"We're pleased to work closely with Tundra toward furthering the growth and adoption of RapidIO," said Sebastien Marineau Mes, lead OS architect, QNX Software Systems. "Our unique architecture meshes well with the RapidIO model, and the advances made by Tundra allow us to showcase the combined capabilities of QNX Neutrino and RapidIO extremely well."
"QNX is an important operating system vendor to our customers and a key partner to Tundra," said Jim Parisien, manager, third party partners, Tundra Semiconductor Corporation. "QNX Neutrino's modular design lends very well to a switch fabric system architecture and will provide excellent scalability for multiprocessor applications."
