QNX Announces Availability of First RTOS to Achieve Both Safety and Security Certification

QNX Neutrino RTOS Certified Plus helps manufacturers of mission-critical systems reduce the time and expense of certifying their end products

OTTAWA — December 14, 2011 — QNX Software Systems Limited, a global leader in operating systems, development tools, and professional services for connected embedded systems, today announced that QNX Neutrino RTOS Certified Plus™, the first realtime operating system to provide both safety and security certification, is now available for order.

QNX Neutrino RTOS Certified Plus is the first and only RTOS to offer both IEC 61508 certification at Safety Integrity Level 3 (SIL 3) and Common Criteria ISO/IEC 15408 certification at Evaluation Assurance Level 4+ (EAL 4+).

This unique dual certification offers a significant advantage to any manufacturer whose products must satisfy rigorous demands for functional safety and data security in power plants, hospitals, and other mission-critical environments.

Certification to IEC 61508 SIL 3 provides independent validation that QNX Neutrino RTOS Certified Plus delivers a very high level of reliability and risk reduction when used in safety-critical systems for transportation, energy generation, process control, healthcare, and other industries. Certification to the Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation provides validation from a certified laboratory that QNX Neutrino RTOS Certified Plus fulfills the security function requirements and the enhanced methodologies and security controls required for EAL 4+.

Designed for systems that have low tolerance for failure, QNX Neutrino RTOS Certified Plus is based on the QNX Neutrino RTOS, which powers train-control systems, nuclear plants, wind turbines, process automation systems, medical devices, and a host of other safety-critical applications, making it a field-proven platform for systems that must meet stringent requirements of availability and reliability.

With advanced support for symmetric multiprocessing (SMP), QNX Neutrino RTOS Certified Plus enables the parallelism necessary for successful multi-core designs. It also supports adaptive partitioning, an efficient form of CPU time partitioning that helps prevent malicious code and denial-of-service (DoS) attacks from monopolizing the CPU.

QNX Neutrino RTOS Certified Plus also supports a POSIX-compliant application programming interface (API), which allows application developers greater flexibility to port existing applications to the platform.
