QNX Joins Service Availability Forum to Define and Promote Industry Standards

Paris, France, Nov. 6, 2002 - Continuing its commitment to standards and interoperability, QNX Software Systems announced today that it has been accepted into the Service Availability Forum. QNX Software Systems will work with member companies to define open, industry-standard specifications for building high availability (HA) systems. Because of the current lack of industry standards for HA, networking equipment manufacturers (OEMs) must incur the high cost of creating their own proprietary approaches, rather than use off-the-shelf building blocks. Standards created by the Forum will help eliminate these costs and accelerate development of communications equipment that support the market demand for fast delivery of ultra-dependable, next-generation services.

"With high availability so integral to the heart of a system, creating well-defined standards is mandatory if networking OEMs are to respond rapidly to emerging market needs," said Pierre Charon, Netcoms product manager, QNX Software Systems. Until now, implementing high availability has been a fragmented effort, with companies implementing HA on their own. The result: costly and time-intensive development for all OEMs, and proprietary frameworks that are incompatible. Costs also extend to the customization, integration, and maintenance of disparate systems. By developing an open, non-proprietary framework for delivering high availability services, the Service Availability Forum will save OEMs and their customers a substantial amount of time and expense, and expedite the development of next-generation services.
