QNX Marks Tenth Anniversary of Symmetric Multiprocessing

    MULTICORE EXPO, SANTA CLARA, CALIF., March 27, 2007 -QNX Software Systems, the industry leader in multi-core processing for embedded systems, today is marking the tenth anniversary of the commercial availability of its symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) technology. QNX introduced the embedded industry’s first SMP solution in 1997, in a release of the QNX® Neutrino® microkernel operating system.

    Ideally suited for the new and complex generation of multi-core designs, QNX SMP has become an integral part of the company’s multi-core offerings, which provide the only comprehensive foundation for migrating embedded applications to next-generation multi-core hardware.

    Recently, QNX augmented its multi-core offerings with the addition of bound multiprocessing (BMP). Using this innovative technology, software designers can quickly migrate legacy uniprocessor code to a multi-core chip by binding the code to a specific core, while allowing new SMP-enabled applications to take advantage of all available cores.

    “Because of its pioneering work in multiprocessing, QNX is now the only embedded software vendor with a proven solution for migrating applications to multi-core systems,” said Mark Roberts, director of product management at QNX Software Systems. “Combined with our powerful visualization tools for analyzing multi-core systems, our SMP and BMP solutions significantly reduce migration efforts while allowing developers to realize the full parallelism and performance that multi-core processors have to offer.”

    In addition to industrial controllers, defense systems, and networking equipment from Cisco and Juniper, QNX multi-core technology is being used in clinical test equipment and TV broadcast automation systems. QNX has been awarded a patent for its SMP solution. In addition, QNX recently expanded its multi-core offerings with visualization tools for optimizing multi-core systems, an embedded industry first. The multi-core visualization tools have been named a finalist for the prestigious EDN Innovation Award.
