OTTAWA, October 15, 2008 — QNX Software Systems, the global leader in operating systems and middleware for the automotive infotainment market, today announced its latest high-performance solution for creating graphical user interfaces for embedded products. The QNX Aviage HMI player for Adobe® Flash® Lite™ 3, version 1.1 allows embedded developers to combine the rich graphics capabilities of Adobe Flash with the mission-critical reliability and performance of the QNX® Neutrino® realtime operating system (RTOS). QNX (Booth #207) will demonstrate the QNX Aviage HMI Player later this month at the Convergence 2008 vehicle electronics conference, which takes place in Detroit, Michigan from October 20 to 22.

The QNX Aviage HMI Player for Adobe Flash allows software designers to implement entire user interfaces in Adobe Flash, thereby eliminating the lengthy, traditional process of coding graphical HMIs “by hand.” The new version supports most Flash 8 content, including both local and streaming Flash content such as audio and Flash Player compatible video (FLV); it also supports Flash 9 content when the Flash application uses ActionScript 2.0. The QNX Aviage HMI Player supports the ActionScript extension interface introduced with Adobe Flash Lite version 3.1. This interface allows developers to make calls from ActionScript code directly to native C/C++ code. This new capability provides an efficient interface between an embedded HMI and underlying realtime code.

Because it runs on the QNX graphics framework, a self-healing, priority-driven graphical environment engineered for realtime, embedded applications, the QNX Aviage HMI Player allows Flash applications to seamlessly share the screen with other 2D/3D graphics applications, including web browsers and 3D applications based on the OpenGL ES API. The QNX graphics framework also allows for seamless integration of Flash HMIs with existing graphics frameworks, both third party and homegrown. The new HMI player also runs on the QNX Photon® microGUI® windowing system, providing a customizable foundation for creating embedded HMIs that require a full-featured windowing system.

“QNX is a pioneer in bringing Adobe Flash applications into automobiles, industrial control systems, and other embedded devices,” said Bill Graham, senior product line manager, QNX Software Systems. “By combining the proven performance and reliability of the QNX Neutrino RTOS with the graphical capabilities of Adobe Flash, the QNX Aviage HMI player offers software designers near-limitless potential to create highly dynamic and compelling HMIs. We see the QNX Aviage HMI player as the key to changing the ‘face’ of countless embedded applications.”

The QNX Aviage HMI player for Adobe Flash Lite 3, Version 1.1 runs on a wide range of embedded platforms, including x86, SH-4, ARM11, and PowerPC architectures, making it ideal for automotive infotainment systems, industrial control applications, portable devices, and a broad range of other environments.
