SINGAPORE, March 24, 2005 - Nanyang Technological University (NTU) today announced that it has chosen the QNX® Neutrino® realtime operating system (RTOS) for its course on embedded system programming, one of the core subjects for the Masters of Science program in NTU's School of Computer Engineering.
NTU is the latest tertiary institution in the Association of South Asian Nations (ASEAN) to benefit from the QNX-in-Education program, an international initiative that provides students and professors in pure or applied research with free access to state-of-the-art development tools and operating system technology. Earlier QNX laboratories were initiated by the Robotics Research Center at NTU's School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE).
NTU was invited to participate in the QNX-in-Education program for several reasons, including its technical expertise, the quality of its professors, and the impressive number of engineering students that it graduates every year - students who then export their skills to all parts of the world.
"For many years, NTU staff and students have developed realtime applications using QNX operating systems. Projects benefiting from QNX technology include underwater robotics, intelligent sensor systems, NDT analysis software, mobile robotics vehicles, and fusion of radar-ladar data (for outdoor feature extraction, matching, and localization). Students enrolled under the mechatronics specialization receive formal training in realtime programming and hands-on experience with the QNX Neutrino RTOS," said Associate Professor Dr. Gerald G. L. Seet, Director, Robotics Research Centre.
"In the new embedded programming course, students will pick up valuable skills for implementing embedded systems applications. We are glad to work with the QNX team to deliver key features such as multithreading, multitasking, scalability, robustness, and high availability - all of which are essential for our projects on drive-by-wire automotive control systems, medical support systems, building automation, and so on," commented Associate Professor Graham Leedham, Head, Division of Computing Systems, School of Computer Engineering.
