, a global leader in software platforms for connected embedded systems, today announced that Systems Engineering Consultants Co. Ltd. (SEC), a leading realtime technology and services company in Japan, has developed a new IEC 61508 certified robotics middleware product, using the QNX® Neutrino® Realtime Operating System (RTOS) Safe Kernel as the OS foundation. The QNX Neutrino RTOS Safe Kernel has been certified to IEC 61508 at SIL 3. SEC is working to create a standardized platform designed to make robotics development easier, faster, and more cost-effective.
SEC is an active participant in the Japanese governments initiative and research programs for standardization of robotics technology. SECs RTMSafety middleware allows robotics elements, such as actuators and sensors, to be treated as modular components. Manufacturers can combine these components to build robot systems with various functionalities.
SECs new RTMSafety middleware has been certified to the IEC 61508 standard at Safety Integrity Level 3 (SIL3) by an independent body. The middleware is designed to facilitate efficient, cost-effective development of safety-related systems for robots, including factory automation robots and personal-care robots used in medical and elderly care settings, demand for which is on the rise. RTMSafety offers two main features: a software framework for robotics components and a functional safety library that provides fault detection and application life-monitoring features.
SEC has been working with industry groups and robotics societies to promote component standardization, which we believe will eliminate cost issues that have prevented commercialization of robotics. After much R&D effort, we are getting ready to move into the business phase to offer our customers an IEC 61508 certified middleware platform to run on the QNX Neutrino RTOS Safe Kernel, said Shintaro Sakurai, executive director and senior manager, Engineering and Development Division of SEC.
