QNX and National Instruments Provide Faster Migration Path to Multi-Core Processors

    NÜRNBERG, Embedded World 2007, February 13 - This week at Embedded World, National Instruments is showing how embedded engineers can now use the NI LabVIEW graphical dataflow environment to target multi-core systems based on the QNX® Neutrino® realtime operating system (RTOS).

    Managing multiple processing cores can be a challenge for engineers accustomed to single-processor designs. To address this problem, LabVIEW and the QNX Neutrino RTOS remove low-level details like thread management, providing the first rapid development platform for multi-core systems.

    Engineers using LabVIEW to design, prototype, and deploy their embedded designs with QNX Neutrino can develop programs with multiple simultaneous execution paths and can instantly see increased processing power with no special coding or configuration required. Engineers do not have to worry about additional thread management and multitasking coding because the QNX Neutrino RTOS handles this automatically.

    Additionally, engineers using the National Instruments LabVIEW Embedded Development Module with the QNX Neutrino RTOS do not have to choose a target CPU up front. Instead, they can complete the design and prototype stages using off-the-shelf hardware such as National Instruments CompactRIO or PXI, without addressing the final target configuration. After measuring the required CPU performance, the engineer can choose a single-core or multi-core target based on specific application needs.
