Advantech and QNX Software Systems collaborate to provide advanced hardware support

Irvine, California, September 12, 2007 — With the increasing popularity of the QNX® Neutrino® realtime operating system (RTOS), Advantech is working with QNX Software Systems to provide customers with the most innovative and up-to-date technology support in the embedded market today.

Early this year, Advantech began its promising partnership with QNX, a leading provider of RTOS software, development tools, middleware and services for embedded design. In the early 1980s, when the company was founded, QNX’s main markets included telecom, industrial automation, and medical instrumentation; the company has since gained prominence in other markets as well, including automotive and consumer markets.

Unlike conventional operating systems, the QNX Neutrino RTOS uses a fault-resilient microkernel architecture, in which device drivers, networking stacks, file systems and applications all run as separate, memory-protected processes. This highly modular architecture allows developers to create self-healing systems that can intelligently recover from software faults and dynamically support new applications and services.

On September 12, 2007, QNX will launch its new hybrid software model. As part of this new strategy, QNX will publish the source code for the QNX Neutrino RTOS and allow developers to access the code at no charge. QNX is also making its development process transparent, allowing members of the QNX community to participate in product development, access post bug reports, offer code modifications, and enjoy many other benefits normally restricted to open source projects. Developers can also modify the OS source code to fit their unique application needs. They can then keep those modifications proprietary or share them with the rest of the QNX community.

“We plan to work with QNX to develop BSPs (board support packages) for ETX, COM-Express, and a wide range of SBC system boards. What that will do is allow customers who are interested in QNX to use boards that have been certified by Advantech,” says David DeMint, Advantech project manager. “Customers who want to use QNX will have a number of certified Advantech SBCs to choose from.”

As one of the largest embedded computing manufacturers, Advantech will play a key role in the future of the embedded computing market partnered with QNX. With the near-future prospect of certified system boards, Advantech will soon be able to offer a fast and easy integration solution for QNX customers.
