New Supplemental Release Expands Scope of QNX Momentics Development Suite

OTTAWA, July 14, 2003 - - Embedded developers using QNX® Momentics® Professional Edition, the integrated development suite for the QNX Neutrino® RTOS, can now target a broader range of hardware platforms and leverage an array of new features, including an advanced power management framework, a fault-tolerant flash file system, and Big Endian support for ARM-based processors, including network and control-plane processors from Intel.

The features are all part of a new supplemental release for QNX Momentics v6.2.1, available now from QNX Software Systems.

Power Management Framework
Designed for mobile devices used in automotive, medical, defense, and networking applications, the new power management framework gives developers precise, fine-grained control over the power consumption of each system component.

Unlike conventional approaches, the new framework allows the application, not the OS, to determine power management policies. As a result, developers can create a highly customized power policy for each device they build, allowing faster response times, a wider range of operational scenarios, and longer battery life.

Big Endian Support
With the new release, QNX extends its Big Endian support to ARM processors, including XScale processors from Intel. Targeted mainly at wireless and wireline networking equipment, Big Endian support helps eliminate marshaling overhead, allowing applications such as routing and packet processing to run faster.

Processors that will benefit from this support include the Intel IXC1100 control plane processor and the Intel IXP2400, IXP2800, IXP2850, and IXP4xx network processors.

Fault-tolerant Flash File System
The release introduces a new, fault-tolerant flash file system that identifies and corrects data inconsistencies introduced by failed hardware operations.

In addition, the release provides support for the IJS printer specification, including compatibility with IJS servers.

New BSPs
QNX is also introducing board support packages (BSPs) that take advantage of new features in the supplemental release, such as the fault-tolerant flash file system. The BSPs allow developers to target boards for a number of industries (telematics, networking, general embedded) and from a wide spectrum of vendors (ADI, Alchemy, Artesyn, Broadcom, Intel, Motorola, NEC, Renesas, among others).
