MUNICH, QNX Automotive Summit, November 28, 2007 Combining the sophistication of a full-featured media player for the car with a highly intuitive user experience, QNX Software Systems today announced the commercial availability of the QNX® Aviage® multimedia suite. This automotive-grade middleware solution allows infotainment designers to integrate consumer devices such as iPods into the vehicle, while ensuring the end user experience is simplified and seamless.
The new QNX Aviage multimedia suite is part media server, part media player, and part OEM middleware design platform, allowing automakers and Tier One suppliers to build digital infotainment systems quickly and easily. System designers can take advantage of the products intelligent connectivity, full customization, and rich networking capabilities.
The QNX Aviage multimedia suite includes the features of a digital media jukebox, including audio play and record functions, media organization, and identify-and-connect capabilities. To make content navigation simple and intuitive, the suite will assign a unique identifier to any CD, USB flash disk, or audio stream and automatically synchronize the content on that media source with a customizable, automotive-hardened database. This feature enhances the user experience (What was I listening to the last time I was driving?) and lets users generate playlists that extend across multiple media sources.
Passenger and driver cant agree on music? The suite also supports session management multiple independent users, with multiple device types, and with multiple playback and record paths. For instance, front passengers can listen to MP3 tunes from a connected device while rear-seat passengers listen to different songs stored on that same device with everything managed by a single computing platform. In addition to standard digital audio capabilities such as trick play and scan mode, the QNX Aviage multimedia suite also supports time-shifting (i.e. pausing live radio), multi-view content presentation (shared screen), and other advanced features.
For added convenience, the QNX Aviage multimedia suite can support content recording in a variety of scenarios. For instance, the suite can rip content from one media source to a cars hard drive while allowing users to listen to content from another source. Moreover, users can simultaneously play and record content from the same media they can even pause playback while the recording feature continues. For companies looking to quickly bring advanced digital media platforms to the automotive market, the suite of device drivers, encoders/decoders, and databases available in the QNX Aviage multimedia suite drastically reduces development cycles and time-consuming integration phases. Multi-modal input and display is supported out of the box, so the human-machine interface (HMI) can be a graphical touchscreen or voice control, or both at the same time.
When combined with other QNX middleware products and partner solutions, the QNX Aviage multimedia suite provides automakers and Tier 1 One suppliers with a fully scalable platform for building anything from voice-activated music systems to a fully integrated in-car entertainment network.
Availability and hardware support
The QNX Aviage multimedia solution runs on a variety of 32-bit CPUs and DSPs, including ARM9+, SH-4+, PowerPC processors, and TI OMAP, and on specific automotive-grade hardware platforms from Freescale, Renesas, Texas Instruments, and Intel. The QNX Aviage multimedia suite will be commercially available in December 2007.
