QNX Unveils Linux Connectivity Solution for Networking OEMs

    OTTAWA, October 4, 2005 — QNX Software Systems, the leading provider of standards-based system software for the networking market, today announced support for the Transparent Inter Process Communication (TIPC) protocol, the emerging standard for achieving interoperability among operating systems (OSs) in network elements, carrier-grade clusters, and other multiprocessor-based communications systems.

    Ideal for high-performance, high-availability designs that use a mix of general-purpose and realtime OSs, TIPC offers significantly greater speed and efficiency than TCP/IP, while delivering loss-free message delivery, location transparency, and other advanced features demanded by next-generation communications equipment.

    “QNX support for TIPC comes at a critical time, when designers of ATCA and multicore-based communications systems may use Linux for the control plane, but need an RTOS like QNX® Neutrino® to achieve extremely fast and predictable performance on the data plane,” said Romain Saha, network segment manager at QNX. “With this new TIPC solution, system designers can leverage the best of the Linux and QNX worlds, while enjoying seamless interoperability between the two.”

    “We are introducing TIPC support for the same reason that we pioneered adoption of standards like RapidIO, POSIX, and Eclipse: It offers our customers the portability and interoperability of a standards-based solution, while allowing them to leverage the vastly superior performance and reliability of our component-based OS architecture,” said Mark Roberts, director of product management at QNX.

    A Perfect Complement

    TIPC serves as a perfect complement to QNX’s native distributed processing, a mature and extremely efficient IPC mechanism that transforms a network of connected QNX-based devices into a logical supercomputer. With QNX distributed processing, an application on any processor can transparently access system services and hardware resources running on any other processor, allowing developers to achieve the ultimate in scalability and fault tolerance. QNX developers can now use TIPC for QNX-to-Linux or QNX-to-VxWorks communications, while still enjoying the superior performance of QNX transparent distributed processing for QNX-to-QNX communications.
