Advances in embedded electronics, such as hardware miniaturization, have allowed for substantial increases in processing power, tighter integration of peripherals and savings in power consumption. These advances have enabled innovations like assisted driving and electrification in cars, and intensive automation and connectivity in industrial systems.

When components designed for very separate purposes —specifically safety-critical and non-safety critical functions — are deployed on a single System on Chip (SoC), this heterogeneity is referred to as mixed criticality. Systems that combine functions in this way present some challenges. For example, they must demonstrate that safety functions with the highest level of criticality are free from interference from functions with a lower level or no degree of criticality.  These and other considerations can have an impact on design and development efforts, particularly when it comes to functional safety.
