QNX Developer License Options

Licensing options for access and use of QNX software

There are several licensing options for access and use of our software. In all cases, your use of the software is subject to the terms and conditions of the relevant QNX Development License (QDL) published through https://licensing.qnx.com/.  If you have any questions about our license terms, please contact us at licensing@qnx.com.

Which QNX Software License is right for me?

To guide you to the type of license that is right for you, consider your use case and determine which license is appropriate. General guidance is provided below. Note, certain portions of the QNX Software portfolio are only available under a Commercial License.

Non-Commercial License

A Non-Commercial license may be right for you if you want to:

  • Use the product to learn more about QNX software, including working on a non-commercial project in pursuit of an academic goal (e.g. in a classroom setting or as part of your academic studies).
  • Develop training material or books describing how to use our products, including if you intend to offer that material commercially.
  • Develop open-source software (OSS) that is interoperable with QNX software, provided you make the resulting OSS publicly available at no charge.
  • Build a product or system as a hobbyist or maker, provided you do not make a commercial product or put the resulting software or system into production use.
  • Work on certain research projects (including as part of a commercial enterprise) leading to initial prototypes, subject to conditions (contact us at licensing@qnx.com to confirm eligibility).

Commercial License

A Commercial license may be right for you if you want to:

  • Use the product for activities that involve conducting business operations that fall outside the scope of what is permitted under a non-commercial license.
  • Use the product for activities in exchange for a fee or consideration of any kind (except for those specific, limited non-commercial use cases that generate revenue and are permitted – namely development of training materials or books, academics who are paid for their research and instruction, paid development of interoperable OSS, and paid limited development of certain prototypes).
  • Build or develop a commercial product or system, including putting the resulting software or system into production use (note: distribution and production use is not permitted under a development license and requires a separate distribution license).
  • Build or develop a product or system (e.g. as part of a product roadmap) to demonstrate to existing or potential customers.
